To mark the occasion we had a photo shoot to capture our creative talents and set future trends for 2010. We have recently entered our most creative images into the Mizani Afro Catwalk Look Award and Colour Trophy categories which is one of 4 categories of the prestigious L'Oreal Colour Trophy 2010 competition. We plan to enter other competitions throughout 2010.
No matter how far we go in the competitions, the experience of capturing our work in a professional photoshoot and competing in such a prestigious competition will raise our skills and standards as a whole, benefiting everyone at Silk Trends.

Dandruff is not a new problem. Even the ancient Egyptians had it! It's not uncommon either. Almost half the adult population of this country suffer from it at some time in their lives. Sadly, no real cure has yet been found for it. If you are a sufferer, the best you can hope for is to control it. - We have a guaranteed answer!
Normally, your skin is constantly shedding its top layer without you noticing. In the case of dandruff, the shedding process is accelerated up and the flakes of skin are larger and therefore more noticeable. As yet, it's not fully known why this happens. The most widely accepted opinion is that it's due to micro-organism activity on the scalp and it's sometimes associated with tension or an emotional upset.
Although dandruff can sometimes be kept at bay by normal brushing and washing with the right medicated shampoos, this is often only a very temporary measure. What the problem really needs is a Shampoo which rids the scalp of the existing dandruff and helps to prevent the growth of the micro-organisms. It's preferable to do this without the unpleasant odour or colour of some of the prescription type products.
The Solution
We find that the most effective products for doing the job are those that contain ZINC PYRITHIONE, such as the Mizani Scalp Care System which combining potent salicylic acid with powerful pyrithione zinc (ZPT), two clinically effective active ingredients proven to eliminate the recurrence of scalp flaking, scaling, and itching.

Some brands on the market appear to clear dandruff - but can also damage your hair!. Remember, always follow the instructions carefully. If one particular brand really doesn't work, try another until you've found one that suits you.
Always keep your brushes and combs clean as it's quite easy to re-infect the scalp. Also watch out for allergies. Some types of anti-dandruff shampoos can cause a reaction - if in doubt or worried in any way, stop using the product immediately and consult your doctor.

When using heat styling tools on your hair, it is important to take the necessary steps to protect your hair or you could end up with some very undesirable results.
Many people do not realise that even the highest quality professional ceramic and tourmaline flat irons can have a damaging effect on your hair if used incorrectly or too frequently, or if your hair is not adequately protected. Heat damage to your hair is hard to repair, and most of the time you will have to cut your hair to get rid of the damage.
As you probably know, temporarily straightening your hair with a flat iron is done by applying heated plates to the length of your hair. The heat straightens your hair by breaking and then reforming the hydrogen bonds in the inside of your hair. The Creme de La Creme British Hair Awards 2007 held at The Yaa Asantewaa Arts Centre, W9 on Friday 20th July, was the first Hair Awards to recognise independent salons and local talent in the hairdressing industry.

There will be a range of courses on offer, from basic hairdressing to advanced cutting and colouring. Courses will be designed to cater for all levels, from beginners wanting to develop skills for a career in Hairdressing, to the more experienced stylists wanting to refresh their existing skills.
The training academy will run every Monday with up to 6 students, with daytime and evening sessions available. The first course 'Simply Cuts' (a beginners cutting course) which will run for 3 weeks from Monday 6th August. The ultimate hairdressing group has finally planted in Waltham Forest! This sophisticated salon is nicely arranged within a deceptively spacious Edwardian property situated on Chingford Mount Road being the first multicultural salon to service Afro, European and mixed heritage hair types.
Silk Trends is a dream come true for Mother and Daughter team from Manchester Ingrid Farrell and Dionne Condor-Farrell who both worked incredibly hard to materialise their venture on a very low budget. When asked why they decided to open a hairdressers in Chingford they said, "We wanted to bring a service to the area that was lacking for local people of different cultures." They continued to say how their hair design business will be an asset to the Waltham Forest community. "We will be the first truely multicultural hair salon in Chingford catering for all hair types. We will also maintain a friendly, fair and creative work environment, which respects diversity, ideas and hard work."
The salon not only provide expert hairdressing and a relaxing environment; they use high quality styling and maintenance products, have a training academy, and a mini art gallery! The team is excited: "We want to showcase work created by multicultural artists who rarely get a chance to exhibt their work. Also important is our training academy, which is especially targeted at clients who want to learn hot to care for and maintain their hair and allows aspiring local hairdressers to learn new skills; includes tutor sessions for current stylists to refresh their knowledge." Ingrid Farrell, Manager of Silk Trends said, "We provide training opportunities that encourage creative learning and practical skills that can be put into practise immediately."
